Frequently asked questions

Does the fascia carry the gutter?
In most domestic roofs, yes — the gutter brackets screw into it and it carries the weight of a full gutter, which when running is considerably more than the empty section suggests. That is why the board's fixing into sound rafter ends matters more than the board itself. A new fascia screwed to decayed tails looks perfect and holds nothing.
What do I find when I take the old fascia off?
Frequently, decay at the rafter feet. The fascia has been keeping water off them for decades, and where it has failed the ends are soft. Splicing new timber onto rafter ends is a structural repair with its own cost and its own labour, and it is the single most common reason a fascia job overruns.
Does capping over old fascia work?
It hides the problem rather than solving it. Cladding a decayed timber fascia with a plastic capping seals moisture in against it and leaves the gutter fixed to timber that is failing. Where the substrate is sound it is a legitimate cosmetic option; where it is not, it postpones a larger repair and makes the eventual inspection harder.
Where does the roof ventilation go?
Usually at the eaves, through a soffit vent or a fascia-mounted strip, and it must not be blocked by the new board or by insulation pushed into the eaves. Replacing fascia and soffit is the moment eaves ventilation is either fixed or accidentally sealed up, and the second is a common cause of condensation appearing in a roof the following winter.
