Frequently asked questions

Do gutter guards mean I never clean the gutter again?
No, and expecting that is the usual disappointment. Guards keep leaves out; they do not stop pine needles, seeds, shingle grit or the fine organic sludge that all of it becomes. On most designs that material builds a mat on top of the guard, and once it does, water runs over the front of the gutter instead of into it. Guards change the cleaning from quarterly to annual, not to never.
Which type suits which debris?
Broadly: mesh and micromesh handle fine debris but clog with pollen and grit and need washing; reverse-curve guards shed leaves well but can overshoot in heavy rain on a steep roof; brush and foam inserts are cheap and trap needles inside the gutter where they are harder to remove. The right choice depends on what actually falls on your roof.
What happens at valleys?
Concentrated flow. A valley collects the water of two roof planes and delivers it to a short length of gutter at high velocity, and many guard designs cannot take it in — the water jumps the guard and lands beyond the gutter. Valley outlets often need a splash guard, a diverter, or a deliberately unguarded section.
Will a guard hold snow and ice?
It can make ice problems worse. A guard adds a surface for meltwater to refreeze on and can hold an ice mass over the gutter, and in some designs it prevents the gutter shedding ice as it would otherwise. In a climate with ice damming, the underlying causes — attic heat loss and ventilation — matter far more than the guard, and the guard alone does not address them.
