Why does a taller sandbag wall need a wider base?
Each course should be set back slightly from the one below it (a pyramid shape) so the weight of the water pressure is spread across a wider footprint — a straight vertical stack more than a couple courses high is unstable and prone to toppling.
How full should each sandbag be?
Bags are typically filled only about half to two-thirds full so they can be shaped and stacked tightly against each other, sealing gaps — an overfilled bag stacks poorly and leaves more gaps for water to pass through.
Is sand the only fill material that works?
Sand is standard because it's heavy and conforms well to gaps, but in an emergency, soil or other heavy granular material can substitute if sand isn't available — avoid lightweight or absorbent fills that won't hold shape or resist water pressure.
