Isn't waste already built into most calculators on this site?
Many material quantity calculators already add a waste factor to the quantity itself — this calculator is for when you have a fixed exact-quantity cost (e.g. a quote for precisely-measured material) and want to add a cost buffer on top separately.
What drives a higher waste percentage?
Complex cuts (angled rooms, many corners), patterned materials that need to match across seams (some tile and wallpaper), and inexperienced installation all tend to waste more material than a simple, experienced, rectangular-room job.
Should leftover material be considered a loss?
Not entirely — a reasonable amount of leftover material is valuable for future repairs (matching flooring, tile, or paint color exactly), so budgeting waste isn't pure loss.
