Frequently asked questions

Where should the money go if the budget is tight?
Into the services and the worktop, and away from the doors. Wiring, waste runs and extract ducting are buried behind and under everything else, and changing them later means taking the kitchen out again. Cabinet doors, by contrast, unscrew — a carcass with cheap doors can be transformed in a weekend in five years' time. The breakdown shows the cabinetry share so you can see which way your budget leans.
Why is 15% contingency the minimum here?
Because a kitchen strip-out is one of the most reliable generators of unwelcome discoveries in domestic work. Behind the units you find damaged plaster, a circuit that will not take an induction hob, a waste running the wrong direction, and a floor that is 20 mm out across the room. None of it is visible while the old kitchen is standing, and all of it is found on the day the new one is delivered.
Does this include taking the wall down?
No, and that is deliberate. Structural work — forming an opening, inserting a beam, moving a soil stack — belongs in its own budget with its own design fees and sign-off. Folding it into a kitchen figure is how a £20,000 kitchen becomes a £55,000 project without anyone noticing where it happened.
