What this covers

Rated board by layer and by face, shaftwall liner panels, intumescent coating to a target dry film thickness, firestop sealant at penetrations and at head-of-wall joints, the aggregate opening cap on electrical boxes in a rated partition, cavity barrier runs and the carrier crossings along them, char depth on exposed mass timber, and the listed edge clearance for rated glazing.

What decides which one you need

Whether the thing you are quantifying is on a tested line or merely near one. A rated assembly is tested whole — the board, the fixings, the joint treatment and whatever passes through it — so a substitution that looks equivalent sits outside the test that earned the rating. Every page here asks what the tested detail actually is instead of averaging across products, and several hand back a figure whose job is to be taken to the listing rather than acted on.

What this does not cover

Active systems — detection, alarm, suppression and smoke control — which are designed by a different discipline and sized to a different question; and means of escape, which is about people moving rather than about a line holding.
