Carpet Roll Length & Waste Calculator

Calculate the length of broadloom carpet needed from a standard roll width, including seaming and pattern-match waste.

Computed in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded. Figures are presented for United States against IRC 2024, and every formula is cited under regulatory standards below.

Who is doing the work?

The standard allowance most suppliers and estimating guides assume for ordinary work.

Carpet roll length needed

19.72 ft

Check your inputs

Rooms wider than the roll width require seaming, which adds waste beyond this base estimate — for rooms requiring multiple carpet widths, consult an installer for exact seam placement and cut-length waste.

Running these inputs gives 6.01 m as the carpet roll length needed. Expect some drift against the real job; the calculation is solid but conditions on site are not. Currently reading for United States under IRC 2024 — pick a different market above and the figures re-cast accordingly.

Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Spotted an arithmetic or standards error? Report it to contact@craftquantities.com with your inputs — confirmed fixes become pinned regression tests.

  • Roll length needed = (room area × (1 + waste allowance)) ÷ standard roll width, accounting for seaming, pattern matching, and pile direction waste

Frequently asked questions

Why does this divide by the roll width?
Broadloom carpet is sold as a continuous roll of fixed width — since only the room area needs covering, dividing the (waste-adjusted) area by the roll's width converts that area into the length of roll you need to order.
Does this account for pattern matching?
Only loosely, through the waste allowance percentage — carpets with a strong repeating pattern typically need a higher waste allowance than plain or textured carpet to line up the pattern across seams.
What if my room is wider than the roll?
Rooms wider than the standard roll width require one or more seams, which use extra carpet beyond this base estimate and need careful seam placement — consult a professional installer for exact cut lengths in that case.
