Frequently asked questions

Why does the grid factor matter more than my efficiency measures?
Because it varies by more than an order of magnitude between grids and it falls every year in most markets, while a retrofit might cut consumption by a third. The same building emits fifteen times as much on a coal grid as on a hydro one. That is not an argument against efficiency — reduced demand is real and permanent — but it does mean an assessment that does not state its factor and its year is not saying much.
Should I assume the grid will decarbonise?
State it explicitly if you do, and show the result without it as well. A 3% annual fall over sixty years removes most of the projected emissions on paper, and it is a forecast about policy and investment, not a measurement. The breakdown gives both figures side by side precisely so the assumption cannot hide inside the total.
What is the difference between location-based and market-based?
Location-based uses the physical grid average where the building sits; market-based uses the supply you have actually contracted, including any renewable tariff. The same consumption can produce very different figures, and both are legitimate for different purposes — what is not legitimate is reporting one and describing it as the other.
