Deck Board Calculator

Estimate how many deck boards you need, accounting for board width and the gap left between boards.

Computed in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded. Figures are presented for United States against IRC 2024, and every formula is cited under regulatory standards below.

At the values currently entered, the result works out to 56 boards. The largest intermediate quantity is boards per row (along length), at 2 boards — check that step first if the total looks off. Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Spotted an arithmetic or standards error? Report it to contact@craftquantities.com with your inputs — confirmed fixes become pinned regression tests.

[Schema Verified] Computed in alignment with American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-19) formulas and International Residential Code (IRC 2024) spatial boundaries.

  • A standard 5/4x6 deck board has an actual width of about 5.5 in; a 1/8-1/4 in gap between boards is standard for drainage and seasonal expansion

Frequently asked questions

Why does board length matter, not just total area?
Boards are sold in fixed lengths and you can't usefully join two short pieces end-to-end in the same visible run without a seam over a joist — so the deck's length relative to your board length determines whether you need 1 or multiple boards per row.
Does this account for diagonal or pattern layouts?
No — this assumes boards run straight across the deck. Diagonal or herringbone patterns need meaningfully more material (add 15-20% waste) due to angled cuts.
What about joists and framing underneath?
This calculates decking boards only, not the substructure (joists, beams, footings) — those are calculated separately based on your framing plan and local code.
