Do I still need soffit/ridge vents if I install a powered fan?
Yes — a powered fan needs adequate intake (usually soffit vents) to pull air from, or it will struggle to move air and may even pull conditioned air up from the living space instead. Check the Attic Ventilation Calculator for static intake/exhaust net free area.
Is a bigger fan always better?
Not necessarily — oversizing wastes electricity and, without matching intake ventilation, can create negative pressure problems. This estimates the minimum recommended size, not a maximum.
Does insulation level affect this calculation?
Not directly for CFM sizing (which is about the attic air volume turnover), but better attic floor insulation reduces how much heat load reaches the living space regardless of ventilation — the two work together, not as substitutes.
