Frequently asked questions

Why is track counted separately from studs?
Because it follows a different quantity. Studs scale with wall length divided by spacing; track scales with wall length times two, one run at the floor and one at the head. A wall with studs at 400 mm centres and one at 600 mm needs different stud quantities and identical track quantities.
What is deflection track and when do I need it?
A deeper-legged track at the head that lets the structure above move without loading the partition. Any non-loadbearing partition under a slab or beam that will deflect needs one — otherwise the slab deflects onto the studs and the wall cracks, or worse, starts carrying load it was never designed for. It costs more than standard track and is not interchangeable with it.
Can I use a lighter gauge track with heavier studs?
Not in a rated assembly. Fire and acoustic ratings come from testing a specific combination of stud, track, board and fixings, and substituting any component steps outside what was tested. It also loses the connection capacity at the head and base, which is where a partition is actually restrained.
How much extra should I allow?
Enough to cover boxing out openings, which is easy to leave out of a wall-length take-off. Every door and every borrowed light needs track around it, and on a fit-out with many small rooms that quantity is well beyond a rounding allowance.
