Why is the clear width sometimes larger than the equipment itself?
NEC 110.26(A) sets the required working space width as the greater of the equipment's own width or 750mm (2.5ft). For equipment narrower than 750mm, the code still requires the full 750mm of clear width in front of it.
How do I know which required depth to use?
The required depth (900mm/3ft, 1050mm/3.5ft, or 1200mm/4ft) depends on the equipment's nominal voltage-to-ground and the installation condition (0, 1, or 2, based on what's opposite the equipment) per NEC Table 110.26(A)(1) — this calculator does not look that value up for you, so enter the depth that applies to your specific installation.
