Frequently asked questions

How is a tack coat different from a prime coat?
Different job, different rate, by roughly a factor of five. A tack coat bonds asphalt to asphalt and only needs a thin residual film at the interface. A prime coat has to penetrate a granular base, which takes a great deal more material. Using prime coat rates for tack is the most common way to over-apply.
What is the difference between applied and residual rate?
Emulsion is mostly water when it leaves the distributor. The applied rate is what you spray; the residual rate is the asphalt binder left once the water breaks off, typically around a third of it. Specifications are written in one or the other and rarely say which prominently — reading it wrong gives an error of about 3:1.
Can too much tack coat cause a problem?
Yes, and a serious one. Excess binder at the interface acts as a lubricating layer instead of a bond, and the new mat can shear over the old under braking and turning loads. The result is slippage cracking — crescent-shaped cracks that appear where vehicles brake. More tack is not safer.
Why does the tack disappear before the paver arrives?
Haul trucks pick it up. On a job where trucks cross the tacked area, a substantial proportion leaves on the tyres and ends up on the road outside the site. Trackless tack products exist for exactly this, and where the layout forces trucks across fresh tack they are usually worth the premium.
