What does a prime coat actually do?
It soaks into the top of the granular base, binding the loose surface fines together and giving the first asphalt lift something coherent to sit on. The key word is soaks — unlike a tack coat it is meant to penetrate, which is why it is applied heavily and why an open base drinks so much more of it than a tight one.
How long before I can pave over it?
Typically 24 to 48 hours, and longer in cool or humid conditions. The cure is the solvent or water leaving the emulsion; paving before that finishes traps it under the mat, where it softens the bond it was applied to create. If the surface is still tacky underfoot, it is not ready.
Why does my prime coat keep getting picked up by the trucks?
Because it has not penetrated — usually the base is tighter than the rate assumed, so the emulsion is sitting on the surface rather than in it. The standard remedy is a light blotting sand so haul traffic runs over sand rather than over binder. The better remedy is getting the rate right for the base you actually have.
Is prime coat still standard practice?
Less than it used to be. A number of agencies have dropped it on dense-graded bases, having found it adds little measurable bond while adding a cure delay to the programme. It remains valuable on open or dusty bases and on stabilised subgrades. Price it if the specification calls for it, and ask if it does not.
