Frequently asked questions

How much compost is too much?
Above roughly 20-25% organic content by volume the soil holds too much water, stays cold in spring and can lock up nitrogen while the material finishes breaking down. The breakdown shows the resulting percentage — a 50 mm layer into 150 mm gives 25%, which is a heavy one-off improvement rather than an annual dressing.
Do I have to dig it in?
Not necessarily. A no-dig approach lays compost on the surface and lets worms incorporate it, which preserves soil structure and the fungal network. It is slower to change the measured organic content and better for the soil. Digging in is faster when establishing a new bed from poor ground.
When should I apply it?
Autumn for a surface dressing, so winter weather and soil life work it in before spring. Spring if you are digging it in and planting immediately, though give a coarse compost a few weeks before sowing fine seed — material still breaking down competes for nitrogen.
