Frequently asked questions

What do the three N-P-K numbers mean?
Percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus (as P₂O₅) and potassium (as K₂O). A 20-5-10 bag is 20% nitrogen, so 5 kg of it delivers 1 kg of N. Only the first number sets the application rate for a routine feed.
Why not just use the rate on the bag?
You can, and it is usually reasonable. This exists for when you have a target rate from a soil test or a turf programme and a product whose concentration does not match the one the programme assumed — which is most of the time.
What happens if I apply too much?
Scorch, in stripes matching the spreader pattern, and flush weak growth that invites disease. Fast-release nitrogen in warm weather is the worst case. Split a heavy annual programme into several light applications rather than one large one, and water it in.
