Frequently asked questions

Why does pre-consumer content only count for half?
Because much of it was never really going to be waste. Manufacturing offcuts that a plant would feed back into its own process anyway represent no diversion at all, and the convention discounts the category to reflect that. Post-consumer material has genuinely finished a life with an end user and been recovered, so it counts at full weight.
What counts as the total materials cost?
The project's materials, excluding mechanical, electrical and plumbing components — and it must be the same basis for every line you submit. This denominator is where most submissions go wrong: quietly shrinking it inflates every percentage above it, and an inconsistent basis between lines is the first thing a reviewer notices.
Do I use the invoice total if labour is bundled in?
No — you need the material portion alone. Where an invoice does not separate them, the usual default is to take 45% of the total as material cost. If your supplier can break it out properly, that is better evidence than a default, and it is worth asking for at order rather than at submission.
