Framing take-off starts with spacing and length, and this produces the field stud count that follows from them. Sixteen inch centres yield three studs for every four feet of wall, plus one to close the run. What it deliberately does not include is everything that makes a real wall: corner assemblies need extra studs both for bracing and to give the boarder something to fix to, and every door and window brings kings, jacks, cripples and a header. On a wall with several openings those extras can rival the field count, so this figure is a starting point rather than a materials list. The sixteen-inch module persists mainly because it divides into the forty-eight inch sheet width.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include corners and openings?
No. It is the field count from spacing alone. Corners need multiple studs for bracing and to provide a drywall nailing surface, and every opening adds kings, jacks and cripples. On a broken-up wall those extras are a substantial addition.
When is 24 inch spacing acceptable?
Where the structure, sheathing and finishes all permit it — advanced framing uses wider spacing to reduce material and thermal bridging. It is a design decision, not a site one, and thinner finishes can telegraph the wider spacing.
Why 16 inches specifically?
Because it divides evenly into the 48 inch module that sheet goods use, so board and sheathing edges land on studs. That modular relationship is why the spacing persists even where structure would allow more.
