Turning a boarding area into a sheet count is the first step of a drywall take-off, and the number this produces is a floor rather than an order. It assumes every sheet is used completely, which never happens: cuts around openings, short runs at the end of walls and damage in handling all consume material that the area calculation does not see. The sheet size decision matters more than the count. Twelve-foot boards reduce butt joints, and butt joints are the ones that show through a finished wall, so on longer walls the extra handling difficulty usually repays itself in the finish. Add waste according to how broken up the room is, not as a flat percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 8 ft or 12 ft sheets?
Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which are the hardest joints to finish invisibly. On walls over eight feet long, 12 ft board usually gives a better result. The trade-off is weight and handling — a 12 ft sheet is awkward for one person.
Do I subtract windows and doors?
Only large openings. Small ones produce offcuts too fragmentary to reuse, so deducting them makes the count optimistic. Deduct a patio door; do not bother deducting a window.
How much waste should I add?
Enough to cover cutting and damage — more on a room with many openings, angles or short runs, less on large plain surfaces. Board is also easily damaged in handling, so a broken sheet on delivery should not stop the job.
