Checking a delivery against a take-off means converting sheets back into area, and the useful insight is why the two rarely match. Nominal coverage treats every sheet as fully used, whereas a real room turns a proportion of each board into offcut that fits nowhere else. That is why an order placed at exactly the calculated area leaves a wall unfinished, and why experienced estimators add before ordering rather than after discovering the shortfall. Mixed sheet sizes are worth handling separately in the arithmetic, since a twelve-foot board covers half as much again as an eight-foot one, and most jobs use both for different parts of the same room.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my delivery not cover the room?
Because nominal coverage assumes no cutting. Real rooms consume more, through offcuts at wall ends, cuts around openings and damaged boards. A delivery that exactly matches the calculated area will fall short in practice.
How do I count mixed sheet sizes?
Convert each size separately and add the areas. A 4x12 covers 48 sq ft against a 4x8's 32, and mixing sizes on one job is normal — long walls in 12 ft, patches and small areas in 8 ft.
Does board thickness affect coverage?
No, coverage is a face-area question and thickness does not change it. Thickness affects weight, fire and acoustic performance and what the specification requires, but a 12.5 mm and a 15 mm sheet of the same size cover identically.
