Nine square feet to the yard is exact. The practical difficulty with roll goods is that area is not what you buy: carpet and turf come in fixed widths, and a room whose dimensions do not divide neatly into that width produces offcut no area calculation predicts. Laying out the rolls against the room, allowing for pattern match and pile direction where relevant, gives a far more reliable quantity than converting the area and hoping.
