Area

900 sq ft

High confidence

1 sq yd = 9 sq ft, since a yard is 3 ft and 3² = 9. Roll width usually governs carpet quantity more than area does.

Conversion factor applied
9 sq ft per sq yd

Carpet, turf and some paving are quoted per square yard in North America while measurements are taken in feet, so this conversion sits between the survey and the order. Nine square feet to the yard is exact. The practical difficulty with roll goods is that area is not what you buy: carpet and turf come in fixed widths, and a room whose dimensions do not divide neatly into that width produces offcut no area calculation predicts. Laying out the rolls against the room, allowing for pattern match and pile direction where relevant, gives a far more reliable quantity than converting the area and hoping.

Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Frequently asked questions

Why is carpet sold by the square yard?
Historical convention that has persisted in North American floorcovering while most other trades moved to square feet. Rolls are also made in fixed widths, so length rather than area often governs what you buy.
Does roll width affect the quantity?
Considerably. Carpet comes in standard widths, and a room that does not divide neatly into that width generates offcut regardless of its area. Calculate from the roll layout rather than the area alone.
Is a square yard nine square feet exactly?
Exactly. Area scales with the square of length, and a yard is three feet, so the factor is three squared. There is no rounding involved.
