Frequently asked questions

How big is an acre, really?
43,560 ft², or 4046.86 m². The traditional definition is a chain by a furlong — the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day — which is why it is not a round number in any modern unit. A square acre is about 208.7 ft on a side.
Acres or hectares?
Acres in the United States and, informally, in the UK and Ireland for land. Hectares everywhere metric, including in Australian and Canadian official use. A hectare is about 2.47 acres, so they are not interchangeable at a glance.
My plot is not a rectangle. What now?
Split it into rectangles and right-angled triangles, work out each, and add. Multiplying an average length by an average width over-reads on almost any irregular plot, sometimes badly. For anything being bought, sold or built on, use the surveyed area from the title.
Is a US acre the same as a UK acre?
Yes, since 1959 — both use the international acre of 4046.8564224 m². The older US survey acre differs by about two parts in a million, which matters for federal land records and for nothing else.
