Because almost every material rate is quoted per square foot or square metre. Seeding, surfacing, sub-base and membrane are all specified at that scale, so acreage has to be broken down before any quantity can be worked out.
Does an acre have a fixed shape?
No. It is an area, so an acre can be any shape at all. The traditional one furlong by one chain rectangle is where the number comes from, but a modern parcel is whatever the boundaries make it.
How much of a site gets surfaced?
Far less than the gross area on most projects. Buildings, landscaping, drainage and undeveloped margins all take their share, so surfacing quantities should come from a layout rather than from total acreage.
