What is a shelf angle?
It's a steel angle bolted to the building's structural frame at each floor line (or other interval) to support the weight of the brick veneer above it — without shelf angles, tall veneer walls would need to bear all the way down to the foundation, which isn't practical for multi-story buildings.
Why does veneer need periodic vertical support at all?
Brick veneer is a non-structural (cladding) element with limited height it can safely span without additional support — shelf angles break the veneer into shorter, independently-supported segments at each floor.
Does this include the expansion joint gap below each shelf angle?
No — a soft (compressible) horizontal joint is typically left below each shelf angle to accommodate building movement without transferring load to the veneer below; that gap sizing is a separate calculation.
