What this covers

Ramp flights and landings under both the ADA and Approved Document M, and Approved Document M's external steps; door clear widths against either rule; ADA handrail extensions; wheelchair turning space and door manoeuvring clearance; detectable warning panels at curb ramps; spiral stair headroom and helix geometry; elevator hoistway and escalator wellway sizes; revolving door vestibules; and auditorium riser heights set by the sightlines over the row in front.

What decides which one you need

Whether a dimension is a minimum or a maximum, and whose rule it comes from. A ramp has a maximum slope and a minimum landing, a turning space is a clear area nothing may intrude on, and a hoistway is sized by the car and the clearances around it. Most of these pages turn a clause with one number in it into the geometry around it, and the usual mistake is reading that number the wrong way round.

What this does not cover

The structure of the ramp, stair or shaft, which is framing, steel or concrete; the finishes on its surface; and the temporary ramps and access of a building site.
