Converting a brick count back to wall area answers whether a delivery, or a reclaimed lot, will cover the elevation. For reclaim in particular the raw count overstates what is usable: bricks arrive broken, and those bedded in cement mortar often cannot be cleaned without destroying them, whereas lime-mortared brick cleans up readily. Discount the lot before converting rather than after. On new brick the arithmetic is more reliable, but the same caveats about bond and joint thickness apply, and colour banding is worth planning for — blending from several packs while laying produces a far more even elevation than working through one pack at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I allow for a reclaimed lot?
Discount it before converting. A proportion of reclaimed brick arrives broken or with mortar that cannot be cleaned off, and that fraction varies with how the original wall was built — lime mortar cleans off far more readily than cement.
Will this many bricks finish my elevation?
Only if the bond is running bond and the joints match the assumption. Check the area against the elevation you actually have, and remember that reveals, returns and any header courses consume more than the flat area suggests.
Can I mix brick batches?
Only with care. Batches vary in colour, and a wall built from two lots can band visibly. Where mixing is unavoidable, blending from several packs as you lay disguises the variation far better than working through one pack at a time.
