Why does water-cement ratio matter so much?
It's the single strongest predictor of concrete's strength, permeability, and durability — lower ratios produce denser, stronger, less permeable concrete, all else equal.
Does this account for water already in wet aggregates?
No — this gives the total design water content. A full batch adjustment must subtract free moisture already present in the sand and aggregate before adding mix water at the plant.
What's a typical target ratio for residential slabs?
0.45-0.50 is common for driveways and slabs exposed to freeze-thaw; interior slabs not exposed to weather sometimes use up to 0.55-0.60.
