Plumbing components sourced across markets carry pressure ratings in different units, so a European valve rated in bar has to be checked against a system measured in psi. The conversion is exact, and the two things that go wrong sit either side of it. The first is the gauge-versus-absolute distinction: nearly all plumbing ratings are gauge, measured above atmospheric, and treating an absolute figure as gauge shifts everything by about 14.7 psi — negligible on a high-pressure hydraulic circuit and dominant on a low-pressure gas or water system. The second is the casual equivalence of bar and atmospheres, which are about 1.3 percent apart and only interchangeable in conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is bar the same as atmospheres?
Almost, but not exactly. One bar is 100,000 pascals; one standard atmosphere is 101,325 pascals, about 1.3% higher. The two are often used loosely as equivalents, which is fine for rough work and wrong for anything specified tightly.
Gauge or absolute pressure?
Most plumbing and pneumatic ratings are gauge — measured above atmospheric — and are sometimes written barg or psig. Absolute pressure includes atmospheric and is about 14.7 psi higher. Mixing them up on a low-pressure system is a large proportional error.
What is typical mains water pressure?
In a house, commonly 40 to 80 psi, which is roughly 2.8 to 5.5 bar. Many appliances and fittings specify a maximum inlet pressure, and a pressure-reducing valve is often needed where the main runs high.
