Why does the calculation use member perimeter instead of a flat surface area?
A structural steel member's coated surface is its cross-sectional perimeter carried along its length — multiplying perimeter × length × count gives the total wetted surface area across every member being painted.
Does this account for multiple coats?
No — enter the coverage rate for a single coat. If your specification calls for multiple coats, either run the calculation once per coat and add the totals, or divide your coverage rate accordingly.
Where should the coverage rate come from?
