Concrete specified in one market and supplied in another has to cross this boundary, and it is the one conversion here where getting the units right is not enough. American practice tests cylinders; much of Europe tests cubes; and the same concrete yields a higher number from a cube, typically by about a fifth. European grades such as C25/30 quote both figures precisely because they are not interchangeable, and comparing a cube strength against a US cylinder specification overstates the concrete by a margin that matters structurally. Convert the units, then confirm the specimen type before treating two strength figures as equivalent.

Are cylinder and cube strengths interchangeable?
No. US practice tests cylinders, much of Europe tests cubes, and a cube gives a higher number for the same concrete — commonly around 20% higher. Converting the units does not reconcile the test method, so check which specimen a specification refers to.
Why 28 days?
Because it is the conventional age at which specified strength is verified. Concrete continues gaining strength well beyond it, but 28 days became the standard reference point for compliance testing and mix design.
What is C25/30 in PSI?
European designations give both cylinder and cube strengths — C25/30 means 25 MPa cylinder and 30 MPa cube, so about 3,625 psi cylinder. Read the first number when comparing against a US cylinder specification.
