What this calculation does not cover
- A tipped load is at its most open, and bark does not stay that way. Raking out, the first rain and any treading close the flakes together quickly, long before decomposition has taken anything off the depth, so a delivery levelled to the nominal depth reads shallower once it has bedded in. Spread it proud of the depth you want to keep rather than levelling to that depth on the day.
- Area covered comes out below volume divided by depth. Ground that has just been forked or weeded takes the first of the depth into its own hollows before a continuous layer forms over it, and the tail of a delivery gets raked out thinner than the start as it runs low, so the last stretch either goes on short or does not get done. Buy to the area with a margin rather than dividing the volume down to the last square foot.
- A coarse bark cannot be laid thinner than its own pieces and still be a layer. Stretching a delivery over more ground by reducing the depth stops working at the point where the grade's piece size shows through, and the result is a scatter with soil visible between the chunks that weeds come straight up through, not a thinner continuous mulch. Where the volume will not cover the area at a working depth, cover less ground properly or move to a finer grade.
