Bark lasts longer and looks more uniform; chip is cheaper and breaks down faster. For beds that will not be disturbed, bark's longevity usually repays the extra cost through fewer top-ups.
How deep should bark be?
Deep enough to suppress weeds without smothering roots, and always kept clear of stems and trunks. Piling mulch against woody plants traps moisture against the bark and causes rot.
Does bark acidify soil?
The effect is modest and largely confined to the surface layer where it decomposes. It is rarely a practical concern for ordinary planting, though acid-sensitive plants are worth considering separately.
