How much driveway will my resin bound kits cover?

Two-part resin bound systems are sold as matched kits — resin and the stone it is proportioned for — and mixed whole. Enter the kits you have and the surface they lay comes back at the calculator's driveway depth, the base allowance taken off, read as the length of a single-car drive.

Depth follows the stone

The trade's working rule is a laid depth of at least three times the largest stone, or the surface has too little interlock and ravels. Footpaths in 1 to 3 mm stone are commonly laid at around 12 to 15 mm, and drives in 2 to 5 mm stone at around 18 mm — the calculator's opening depth. A path at 12 mm covers half as much again per kit.

Each kit is matched to its stone

A kit's Part A and Part B are proportioned for a set weight of dried stone, printed on the kit, and kits are never split. The calculator's stone per kit and the stone's loose bulk density are placeholders of the usual order, so enter your system's own figures — the kit count, and the drive here, follow them directly.

A surface, not a structure

Resin bound carries no load of its own; the tarmac, concrete or permeable build-up beneath it does, and cracks or a failing base come straight through. Five per cent extra stone goes into dips in an old base, edges and the mixer, and read backwards it comes off the kits — a rutted drive needs regulating first, not more resin.

How the answer is worked

Nothing here is a second formula. The Resin Bound Surfacing Calculator runs forwards — a size in, a quantity out — and this page grows its own starting driveway in proportion until the quantity it asks for is what you have. Where it rounds up to whole containers, the answer is the largest size before the next one would be needed.

Where the calculator adds an allowance for cuts or breakage when you order, the same allowance comes off here, because it is the same calculator: a stack you already own finishes less than its face value. Where it adds none, neither does this page — the settings beside the answer say which.

Frequently asked questions

How much surface does 12 kits of resin bound kits cover?
At the Resin Bound Surfacing Calculator's own settings, 416 sq ft (38.6 m²) — a driveway 10 ft wide and 41.6 ft long. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
How many square metres does a resin bound kit cover?
It depends on the stone each kit is matched to and the laid depth. At the calculator's placeholder of 100 kg of stone per kit, 18 mm deep, a kit covers about 3.6 m² (39 square feet); at 15 mm for a path, about 4.3 m². Your system's data sheet gives the real figures.
How deep should a resin bound driveway be?
At least three times the largest stone. For a domestic drive in 2 to 5 mm stone that is commonly around 18 mm (about 3/4 inch); footpaths in 1 to 3 mm stone are laid at around 12 to 15 mm. The system's data sheet has the binding figure — there is no British Standard for resin bound surfacing.
Can resin bound go over an old tarmac drive?
Often, if the base is sound. Resin bound adds no structural strength, so cracks, soft spots or a failing base will show through; survey and core the base first, repair it, and regulate dips before the resin goes down rather than filling them with extra kits.
