How big a patio will my paver sealer cover?

Pavers are porous and their joints are open, so sealer goes a shorter way than a paint would. Enter what you have and the paving it seals at the calculator's two coats comes back, read as the square patio of that size — before the sand joints and the edges take their share.

One rate from the middle of the band

The calculator charges every coat at 175 square feet per US gallon, about 16 m² per 3.8 litres, a single value from the 150 to 200 square feet its source quotes for paver sealer. There is no field for the rate on your own pail, and a sealer at the bottom of that band covers roughly a seventh less patio than shown.

The second coat is charged like the first

Two coats is standard for most paver sealers, and the calculator bills the second at the same rate as the first, although it lands on pavers the first coat has partly filled. So the patio here is the cautious figure, and a high-build sealer made for one thicker coat changes the answer — check your product.

Plan area, not wetted area

Only the flat area of the paving is counted. The sand joints between units, the chamfered edges of each paver and the sealer left in the sprayer or roller are all outside it, and there is no waste allowance in the calculator — so keep a little of what you have in reserve for the last corner.

How the answer is worked

Nothing here is a second formula. The Paver Sealer Calculator runs forwards — a size in, a quantity out — and this page grows its own starting patio in proportion until the quantity it asks for is what you have. Where it rounds up to whole containers, the answer is the largest size before the next one would be needed.

Where the calculator adds an allowance for cuts or breakage when you order, the same allowance comes off here, because it is the same calculator: a stack you already own finishes less than its face value. Where it adds none, neither does this page — the settings beside the answer say which.

Frequently asked questions

How much paving does 5 gal of paver sealer cover?
At the Paver Sealer Calculator's own settings, 438 sq ft (40.6 m²) — a patio about 20.9 × 20.9 ft. That is about 1 patio of the size the calculator opens on: a patio about 17.9 × 17.9 ft. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
How much paving does 20 L of paver sealer cover?
At the Paver Sealer Calculator's own settings, 40.6 m² (438 sq ft) — a patio about 6.4 × 6.4 m. That is about 1 patio of the size the calculator opens on: a patio about 5.5 × 5.5 m. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
How many square feet does a gallon of paver sealer cover?
About 150 to 200 square feet per US gallon per coat, roughly 14 to 19 m² per 3.8 litres, depending on how porous the pavers are and what kind of sealer it is. The calculator uses 175 per coat; at two coats a gallon seals about half that area of patio.
How many coats of sealer do pavers need?
Two is standard for most paver sealers, so the second coat can fill what the first soaked into. Some high-build sealers are made for a single thicker coat — the product's own label decides, and one coat roughly doubles the patio a given amount will cover.
Is paver sealer sold in litres or gallons?
Both, but the calculator works in US gallons and square feet because its coverage rate is quoted that way, and a metric reader is shown the whole-gallon count converted afterwards. A litre figure here is therefore a converted US gallon rather than a metric pail size.
