How many feet of parking lines will my striping paint cover?

Striping paint is measured in line, not area: a standard 4-inch (100 mm) traffic line has a fixed width, so a gallon becomes a length. Enter what you have and the run of line it paints comes back — and from that, how many stalls of a row it lines once shared lines are counted once.

Count the lines, not the stalls

Adjacent stalls share the line between them, so a row of 20 stalls has 21 lines, not 40. Multiply one more than the stalls in a row by the stall depth, add the rows, then add perimeter, aisle and direction markings. Counting two lines per stall — the obvious way — very nearly doubles the paint on a long row.

Three hundred feet to the gallon on sound asphalt

The calculator holds 300 linear feet of 4-inch line per US gallon, about 24 metres of 100 mm line per litre, for a sprayed line on sound asphalt. A wider line scales it directly, a porous or weathered surface can halve it, and a brush or roller uses more again — the rate is one figure for every surface.

A car park is more than its lines

Arrows, hatching, accessible-bay symbols and the words at the entrance are areas rather than runs, so the length here understates a real layout. A repaint over existing lines goes further than first marking on bare asphalt, and paint held in the striper's hose, pump and tank is outside the count.

How the answer is worked

Nothing here is a second formula. The Line Striping Paint Calculator runs forwards — a size in, a quantity out — and this page grows its own starting line in proportion until the quantity it asks for is what you have. Where it rounds up to whole containers, the answer is the largest size before the next one would be needed.

Where the calculator adds an allowance for cuts or breakage when you order, the same allowance comes off here, because it is the same calculator: a stack you already own finishes less than its face value. Where it adds none, neither does this page — the settings beside the answer say which.

Frequently asked questions

How much line does 5 gal of line striping paint cover?
At the Line Striping Paint Calculator's own settings: Enough for 1,500 ft of line. That is about 1 line of the size the calculator opens on: 655 ft of line. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
How much line does 20 L of line striping paint cover?
At the Line Striping Paint Calculator's own settings: Enough for 457 m of line. That is about 1 line of the size the calculator opens on: 200 m of line. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
How many feet of line does a gallon of striping paint cover?
About 300 linear feet of standard 4-inch line per US gallon on sound asphalt, roughly 24 metres of 100 mm line per litre. A porous or weathered surface can halve that, and a wider line reduces it in proportion to its width.
How many parking stalls can I stripe with 5 gallons of paint?
At 300 feet per gallon, 5 gallons paints about 1,500 feet (457 m) of 4-inch line. A row of stalls 18 feet (5.5 m) deep uses one more line than it has stalls, so that is roughly 80 stalls in rows — before arrows, symbols and hatching, which take paint by area.
How wide is a parking lot line?
Standard parking stall lines are usually 4 inches wide, about 100 mm, which is the width the calculator's coverage rate is for. A 6-inch line takes half as much again per foot, so the same paint runs two-thirds as far.
