Roofing is quoted in squares and measured in feet, so this conversion is how a homeowner checks a contractor's figure against their own tape. One square is one hundred square feet, always. The catch is that roof area is the sloped surface, not the plan area of the building beneath it: a six-in-twelve roof has about twelve percent more surface than its footprint, and a twelve-in-twelve has over forty percent more. A quote that matches your plan-area measurement exactly is more likely to be wrong than right. Squares also describe area rather than material, so waste for hips, valleys and starter courses is added on top of the converted figure, not contained within it.

Is a square measured on the slope or on the plan?
On the slope. Roof area is always the actual surface being covered, which on a pitched roof is larger than the building footprint. Quoting plan area as squares understates the job, sometimes by a fifth or more on a steep roof.
How many bundles is a square?
Three for most standard three-tab and architectural shingles, though heavyweight and specialty products can run four or five. Check the wrapper — coverage per bundle is printed on it, and assuming three can leave a job short.
Does the square include waste?
No. A square is a unit of area, not an order quantity. Hips, valleys and starter courses generate offcut, so a typical order adds ten percent or more on a simple roof and considerably more on a complex one.
