Rainfall is measured as vertical depth falling on a horizontal area — a steeper roof has more surface area but doesn't catch proportionally more rain, since rain falls straight down regardless of the roof's slope.

It's a simple device that diverts the initial runoff (carrying accumulated dust, pollen, and debris from the roof) away from the storage barrel, so only cleaner water further into the rain event gets collected — commonly recommended for any potable or garden-use rainwater system.
Is collected rainwater safe to drink?
Not without proper filtration and treatment — untreated rainwater can carry roofing material residue, bird droppings, and other contaminants. Most residential rain barrel systems are intended for garden and landscape irrigation, not drinking water, unless a specific treatment system is added.
