The length in linear yards.

A linear yard is a length, not an area and not a volume. Roll goods — geotextile, underlay, membrane, turf, fencing mesh — are sold by the linear yard off a roll of fixed width, so the width is quoted separately and does not enter this conversion.

Length

45.72 m

High confidence

1 yard = 0.9144 m exactly, defined by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement. Exact by definition. Check whether a quoted "yard" is linear, square or cubic before you convert it.

Estimated cost — your price

This site holds no price list for this material — local prices vary too much to publish honestly. Enter your supplier's price and the result is costed with it.

Computed in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded. Presented in US customary units and US trade terminology. Where a formula follows a published standard, that standard and its edition are cited beside it on this page; where none governs, the page says so. Local amendments override model codes — verify against the code in force where you build.

Most jobs need more than one number. Add the calculators you need next and they open right here, underneath this one — your figures stay on screen and nothing is lost to a page change.

Roll goods are where this one bites. Geotextile, damp-proof membrane, underlay, turf and fencing mesh are all sold off a roll by the linear yard in the US and by the linear metre almost everywhere else, and the plan being worked from is usually in the other system from the quote. The arithmetic is exact, but the word "yard" is doing three jobs on a typical supplier's price list — linear, square and cubic — and they differ by factors of nine and twenty-seven. Establish which one the price is against first; the conversion is the easy half.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same yard as a cubic yard of concrete?
It is the same unit of length, and that is where the resemblance stops. A cubic yard is a volume — 27 cubic feet, about 0.765 m³ — and when a supplier says "three yards" of concrete they mean cubic. On a roll-goods quote "yards" means linear. Reading one as the other is a wildly different quantity, so check which the price is against before ordering.
Why does my 50 yard roll come up as 45.72 m?
Because that is what it is. 50 × 0.9144 is 45.72 m exactly. What often happens next is that a supplier's metric catalogue rounds the same roll down to 45 m, which is not a conversion error on your part — it is a genuinely shorter roll, 72 cm short, and on a job that needs every metre it is worth asking which figure the delivered roll actually carries.
Does the roll width matter?
For the order, enormously; for this conversion, not at all. A linear yard of a 2 m wide membrane covers more than twice the area of a linear yard of a 0.9 m wide one. Convert the length here, then take the coverage from length × width in consistent units before comparing two quotes.
Is the yard exact, or rounded?
Exact. The 1959 agreement fixed the international yard at precisely 0.9144 m, which is what made the foot exactly 0.3048 m and the inch exactly 25.4 mm. The US survey yard was very slightly different until it was retired in 2022, by about two parts per million — a distinction for surveyors, not for material orders.
