Structural schedules, drainage runs and setting-out dimensions all cross this boundary when a project spans markets. The factor is exact and follows directly from the defined inch. Where it becomes practical rather than arithmetic is stock length: imperial markets sell timber in eight, ten and twelve foot lengths, metric markets in 2.4, 3.0 and 3.6 metre lengths, and those two grids do not line up. A converted requirement therefore lands between available sizes far more often than not, and the take-off has to be done against whatever grid the supplier actually stocks rather than against the converted figure. On large sites, be aware too that the retired US survey foot differs marginally from the international foot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter feet and inches together?
Convert the inches to a decimal and add them. Six inches is half a foot, so 20 ft 6 in is 20.5. Three inches is 0.25, nine inches 0.75. For odd values, divide the inches by twelve.
Is a US survey foot different?
Slightly, and it matters on large sites. The survey foot was marginally longer than the international foot and was used in US land surveying until its official retirement. Over a short building dimension the difference is invisible; over thousands of feet it is not.
Why does my timber not match the converted length?
Because timber is sold in nominal lengths on a modular grid — 2.4 m, 3.0 m, 3.6 m in metric markets, 8 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft in imperial ones. Those grids do not align, so a converted requirement usually falls between two available stock lengths.
