Why does the formula only cover three faces?
A boxed-in soffit or bulkhead has two vertical side faces and one bottom face exposed to the room — the top is assumed to be closed against the structure above and doesn't need drywall, so only those three faces are counted.
What if the top of the soffit isn't closed against the structure?
This calculator assumes the top is already closed off (against the floor/ceiling structure above), so no top face is included. If your soffit has an open or separately framed top face, add that area separately.
Does this include cutting waste for the drywall pieces?
No — this gives the raw wrap area of the three faces only. Add your own waste allowance when converting this area into sheet counts, since soffit pieces are often small, irregular cuts with more offcuts than a flat wall or ceiling.
