What causes negative skin friction?
When soil around a pile settles more than the pile itself (common with recently placed fill, soft compressible clay, or lowered groundwater causing consolidation), the settling soil drags downward on the pile shaft through friction — instead of the pile relying on that soil for support, the soil adds extra load to the pile.
Why is it dangerous if overlooked?
Downdrag adds directly to the structural load the pile must carry without adding any corresponding increase in the pile's design capacity — piles designed only for structural loads can be overstressed or settle excessively if downdrag isn't accounted for.
How can downdrag be mitigated?
Common methods include coating the pile shaft with bitumen (asphalt) through the settling zone to reduce the effective adhesion factor, pre-loading the fill to complete most settlement before pile installation, or using a sleeve to isolate the pile from the settling soil.
