Usually not for most of a flat, sheltered lawn — sod's own weight and root establishment hold it in place. Staples are mainly valuable on slopes, along streambanks, at the edges of a new installation, and in high-wind areas.
How long do staples stay in place?
Biodegradable staples (wood or degradable plastic) are designed to break down within a season or two as the sod roots establish and no longer need mechanical help staying put.
Does slope steepness change the staple count?
