Frequently asked questions

Why is the rate fixed instead of something I enter?
The headline uses a round reference rate of 0.25 so the page has a definite answer, and the breakdown covers the common rates from 0.15 to 0.35. For any other tariff, divide your amount by your rate — that is the whole calculation, and it is more honest than implying the site knows what you pay.
Should I use the total on my bill?
No. Use only the consumption charge. Standing charges, meter rental, levies and tax are not energy, and including them will overstate the kilowatt-hours by whatever share they represent — on a small or seasonal account that can be a third of the bill.
What if I am on a time-of-use tariff?
Then a single division is an average, not a measurement. Split the bill into its rate bands and divide each by its own rate. On a tariff with a large peak/off-peak spread, treating it as one blended rate can be out by 30% or more in either direction.
What is this actually useful for?
Checking a claim. If a supplier or a contractor tells you a change saved a certain amount of money, converting that back to kilowatt-hours lets you test whether the implied energy saving is physically plausible for the equipment involved. It very often is not.
