How much roof will my cover board sheets cover?

A cover board goes over the roof insulation to protect it and give the membrane a firm, even surface to go on. Enter the sheets you have and the roof they cover comes back sheet for sheet — 32 square feet a 4 by 8 foot board, 2.88 m² a 1.2 by 2.4 m board — with nothing held back for cutting, so keep some in hand yourself.

Two boards, two sizes

The North American 4 by 8 foot board covers 32 square feet (2.97 m²); the 1.2 by 2.4 m board sold elsewhere covers 2.88 m², 31 square feet. The calculator divides the roof by the sheet and rounds up, with no waste, so fifty 4 by 8 boards cover 1,600 square feet, a roof 40 feet square, and fifty metric boards 144 m², 12 m square. Cuts at the edges, curbs and drains all come out of that.

The fastener belongs to the whole stack

The count covers boards and nothing that holds them down. In many assemblies one screw and plate passes through the cover board and the insulation beneath it in a single shot, so the fastener length is set by the board's thickness plus the whole insulation stack plus the embedment the deck needs — and the fastener quantity belongs to that stack and its wind zones, not to this layer on its own.

What the board is made of

Thickness and type are not asked, and the sheet count is the same whichever you pick. Gypsum, high-density polyiso, cement board or mineral board is chosen for the assembly's fire and hail classification and for what the membrane above has to bond to, and those choices carry the cost difference between two roofs of the same area. An adhered install is ordered by adhesive coverage rate and zone layout, not by board count.

How the answer is worked

Nothing here is a second formula. The Roof Insulation Cover Board Calculator runs forwards — a size in, a quantity out — and this page grows its own starting flat roof in proportion until the quantity it asks for is what you have. Where it rounds up to whole containers, the answer is the largest size before the next one would be needed.

Where the calculator adds an allowance for cuts or breakage when you order, the same allowance comes off here, because it is the same calculator: a stack you already own finishes less than its face value. Where it adds none, neither does this page — the settings beside the answer say which.

Calculate the cover board sheets needed over roof insulation before the membrane is installed.

Frequently asked questions

How much roof does 50 sheets of cover board cover?
At the Roof Insulation Cover Board Calculator's own settings, 1,600 sq ft (149 m²) — a flat roof about 40 × 40 ft. Every figure follows the settings, which you can change in the calculator.
What size is a roof cover board?
In North America the common board is 4 by 8 feet, 32 square feet (2.97 m²); elsewhere it is 1.2 by 2.4 m, 2.88 m² (31 square feet). Other sizes and thicknesses are made, so take the size from the product data sheet — the count follows the sheet area exactly.
How many cover boards for a 2,000 square foot roof?
2,000 square feet (186 m²) divided by 32 is 62.5, so 63 boards of 4 by 8 feet by the calculator's count, before any allowance for cuts at the perimeter, curbs and drains. In metric, 186 m² over 2.88 m² boards is 65 sheets (64.5 rounded up).
Why use a cover board on a flat roof?
It sits between the insulation and the membrane as a protection layer, giving the membrane a firm surface to bond to or bear on. Which board — gypsum, high-density polyiso, cement board or mineral board — follows the assembly's fire and hail classification and the membrane's bonding needs, not the roof's area.
