Frequently asked questions

Why do pumps and motors mix HP and kW ratings?
HP is the traditional US unit for motor and pump ratings, while kW is standard elsewhere and increasingly common on generator and electrical equipment ratings — you'll often need to convert between them when comparing specs.
Is electrical horsepower the same as mechanical horsepower?
They're very close (735.5 W vs 745.7 W) but not identical — this calculator uses mechanical horsepower, the more commonly cited figure for motors and pumps.
Does this tell me the electrical input power a motor draws?
No — a motor's rated HP/kW is its mechanical output, not its electrical input. Actual electrical draw is higher due to motor efficiency losses (commonly 80-95% efficient) — check the motor's nameplate amps for actual electrical load.
