Frequently asked questions

Why is the pedestal count near the panel count rather than four times it?
Because each interior pedestal carries the corners of four panels at once. On a large field the count converges toward one pedestal per panel plus one extra row and column at the edges. It is the perimeter that adds the difference, which is why a small room has proportionally many more pedestals than a large floor.
When do I need stringers?
Above modest heights, and wherever lateral stability matters. A low floor on adhesive-set pedestals can be stable enough without them, but as height increases the pedestals become slender columns and the floor needs a bolted grid to brace them. Most manufacturers set a height threshold in their installation data, and rolling loads push it lower.
Does the load rating come from the panel or the pedestal?
From the assembly, and the weakest part of it. A heavy-duty panel on a light pedestal is limited by the pedestal, and a concentrated load applied near a panel edge is limited by the panel's edge condition rather than its centre rating. Ratings are published for the tested combination, and mixing components from different systems invalidates them.
What happens at the perimeter?
Panels get cut, and a cut panel has lost the corner support it was designed around. Perimeter details use additional pedestals, a perimeter support angle, or both, depending on the system. It is the part of an access floor take-off that is most often underestimated, and it is where an installed floor most often flexes.
