Frequently asked questions

How deep should a gravel driveway be?
100 mm (4 in) of compacted stone suits light use on firm ground; 150 mm (6 in) is the usual figure for a car driveway. On soft or clay subgrade you need more, plus a geotextile separator — without one the stone works down into the clay and the drive fails from below.
Why order more than the finished volume?
Because gravel is sold loose and used compacted. Crushed stone loses 15-25% of its loose volume when rolled, so ordering the finished figure leaves you short by that much. The allowance here covers it.
Tonnes or cubic yards?
Whichever your supplier quotes. Both are shown. Weight is the more reliable of the two because it does not depend on how loosely the material was loaded — a cubic yard tipped from a height is not the same cubic yard as one settled in a bin.
Does the type of gravel change the quantity?
The volume, no; the weight, yes. Density varies with the parent rock and the grading, so the same volume of a dense basalt weighs about 15% more than a light limestone. If you are ordering by weight, ask for the density of the grade you are buying.
