Frequently asked questions

What actually holds a paved area flat?
The compacted sub-base, not the pavers. A paved surface is a flexible system in which the base spreads the load and the pavers wear; a thin base under good pavers settles and ruts, while a deep well-compacted base under modest pavers stays flat for decades. The base is also the larger quantity, and it is where the cost sits.
Why does edge restraint matter?
Because the field is only held together by friction in the joints, and that friction depends on the pavers being pressed against each other. Without a restraint at the perimeter the outer course creeps outward under traffic, the joints open, jointing sand washes out, and the failure works inward from the edge. It is a small item guarding the whole area.
Should the bedding layer be thick?
No — and thickening it is a common mistake. The bedding sand is a thin, uniform screed whose only job is to accommodate the small dimensional variation between pavers. Made thick, it behaves as a soft layer that consolidates unevenly under load, and the surface ruts along the wheel tracks. Depth belongs in the sub-base.
How much cutting waste should I allow?
It depends entirely on the shape, not the area. A rectangular field with a running bond wastes little because the offcut from one course starts the next. A circular, curved or diagonally laid area cuts every perimeter unit at an angle and reuses almost none of it — and a herringbone pattern cuts every edge unit regardless of the shape.
