Mulch Tons to Cubic Yards Calculator

Convert a quoted mulch tonnage into cubic yards to check it covers your area.

Approximate volume

25 cu yd

High confidence

About 0.4 short tons per cubic yard for typical wood mulch; density varies widely with material and moisture. The inverse of the volume-to-weight figure. Compare the resulting volume against your compacted or settled requirement, not the loose figure.

Conversion factor applied
2.5 cu yd per short tons

Converting a mulch tonnage into cubic yards is mainly a haulage and handling question, since coverage is almost always specified by volume and depth. The number to watch is not the weight but the settlement: mulch compresses and decomposes, losing depth over a season, which is why beds mulched to the correct depth in spring look thin by the following year. Spreading slightly deeper than the target accounts for that, though piling mulch against stems and trunks causes rot regardless of how the quantity was calculated.

Add the equipment this sizes

This result is a specification — 25 cu yd — not a quantity. Put the thing it sizes into your project: how many, what you call it, and your supplier’s price.

Preliminary estimate, not certified engineering. This tool produces an indicative quantity calculation for planning purposes only — it is not a certified structural analysis, a guaranteed material takeoff, or a substitute for building department approval. Always verify measurements on-site and have a licensed contractor or structural engineer review any load-bearing, code-sensitive, or safety-critical work before purchasing materials or starting construction. Spotted an arithmetic or standards error? Report it to contact@craftquantities.com with your inputs — confirmed fixes become pinned regression tests.

  • Inverse of approximately 0.4 short tons per cubic yard
  • 1 short ton = 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is about 10% heavier

Frequently asked questions

Will a tonne of mulch fit in my trailer?
By weight, almost certainly. By volume, quite possibly not — mulch is bulky and light, so a trailer runs out of space long before it runs out of payload. Convert and check the volume against the trailer's capacity.
How much does mulch settle?
Noticeably over a season, through compression and decomposition. Beds mulched to the target depth look thin within a year, so spreading slightly proud is usual practice.
Is bagged or bulk mulch better value?
Bulk is almost always cheaper per cubic yard, but bags are easier to handle and store. The crossover depends on how much you need and whether you can take a bulk delivery.
