Why is mulch so much lighter than soil?
Because it is largely wood and air rather than mineral particles. A cubic yard of wood mulch weighs roughly a third of a cubic yard of topsoil, which is why it is sold by volume and why a trailer fills up long before it is overloaded.
How deep should mulch be?
Enough to suppress weeds without smothering roots — a moderate layer over beds, kept clear of stems and trunks. Piling it against woody plants traps moisture against the bark and causes rot.
Does mulch type change the quantity?
Not the volume needed, but the coverage life. Fine composted mulch breaks down faster and needs topping up sooner than coarse bark, so the annual quantity differs even where the initial depth is the same.
